Let me start by saying that it is my firm belief that people of every faith and none should be able to enjoy the same freedoms and equal treatment so that they can practice their religion and live by their principles.
I am not aware of any plans to disestablish the Church of England and I would not support any such proposal. I believe the Church is an essential pillar of our society and will always be an important institution in Britain. Our country has been built on Christian values such as compassion, tolerance and respect.
The Church continues to play a leading role in many occasions in our country’s history, from coronations to Remembrance Day. I know that the Government values the relationship between our Church and our State, and I personally believe that it would be sad if that link was weakened.
It is worth bearing in mind that faith is an important part of many people's identities and communities. Churches play an important role in offering spiritual leadership, and in bringing communities and generations together. More widely, churches have a positive impact on their local areas and are often centres of community support, offering services such as youth clubs, after-school care and financial advice. They can also provide a safety net for people in need.
I am aware that the Census 2021 recorded 46.2 per cent of the population of England and Wales as saying they were Christian. While this does represent a decrease compared to the previous census, Christianity is still the most prominent religion. It remains my belief that our local parishes remain at the heart of communities up and down the country.
I am aware that Lord Scriven is bringing forward a Private Member's Bill which seeks to disestablish the Church of England. I hope that this response has explained why such an idea is not one I feel able to support.
I appreciate that we may not agree on all aspects of this issue, and I do take note of the concerns you have voiced. I hope that this response has outlined why I will continue to support the Church of England as our established church.
