On Friday 22nd April, Sarah Dines MP visited Baslow Sports club to meet Becky Lyne, owner of the TrYumph in Life - Community, Self-Empowerment, Fun Club. The club offers after school sports clubs to children, as well as holiday camps during school breaks.
Sarah Dines said, ‘On Friday I had the pleasure of visiting Baslow Sports Club, which is home to Baslow Tennis, Cricket and Bowls clubs, as well as a myriad of other activities for old and young, for the whole community to enjoy.
Becky Lyne, former GB 800 metre runner, and one of the trustees to the Club House set up her own health, fitness and wellbeing club in 2014: ‘TrYumph in Life - Community, Self-Empowerment, Fun.’ Her club offers after school sports clubs to children, as well as holiday camps during school vacations, which is a huge help to many working parents in the area.
On Friday the theme for the holiday camp was SPACE and it was a delight to see the children enjoying activities such as freeze drying fruit (space food), rocket building and launching competitions, space hoppers – a personal favourite from my own childhood - as well as sporting and athletic activities such as hurdles and throwing.
Becky’s Club also encourages adults of all ages to engage in health and fitness activities, including a running club, and a back to netball evening every Tuesday.
I am passionate about our young people getting outdoors and taking part in exercise, especially after the pandemic. This is so important for their health, but also for their social development. This club is a wonderful asset to the community.
Becky also showed me the recently completed forest playground which adjoins the Sports Club, and which I understand has become incredibly popular amongst local families and is sometimes used by the local school, Baslow St Annes.
Whilst visiting the Sports Club House, I was pleased to meet Mr David Robins, another of the trustees. Not only is David responsible for keeping the playing field in perfect condition for seasonal sports (football during autumn and winter, and cricket from spring), but he manages the Club House Pavilion Café, which offers a range of drinks and delicious homemade cakes and lunchtime meals, with all the products locally sourced. I understand that this is hugely valued by local families, where parents can enjoy teas, coffees and treats, whilst children play.
I would like to thank Becky, David and the children attending the Club for making me feel so welcome. It was truly the most lovely way to spend part of a Friday afternoon.’
