On Friday 27th January, Sarah Dines MP visited NE Components Ltd in Bradwell to meet Vince Middleton and David Greenan and to discuss the work of this local company. NE Components Ltd continues the legacy of Newburgh Engineering. Established in 1939, by Isaac Middleton, in the early 50s the company entered the civil nuclear market manufacturing components and assemblies for Dounreay & Calder Hall reactors. Over the years they have served many markets but have consistently remained faithful to the defence and nuclear sector, with systems, assemblies and components in practically all nuclear sites in the UK and many around the world. Sarah Dines requested the visit ahead of Nuclear Week in Parliament where hundreds of industry representatives come together with parliamentarians to promote the opportunities that nuclear energy presents.
Sarah Dines MP commented: “We have so many industry leading businesses in Derbyshire Dales and NE Components Ltd are no different. I was so pleased to meet the Chairman Vince Middleton, and David Greenan who joined the company as an apprentice in 1974. David took the time to show me around NE Components and to explain to me the highly skilled and important work that they do. We discussed nuclear energy and how pleased I was to be able to help the company recently when they were trying to have solar panels installed.
Nuclear has provided the UK with electricity for more than 60 years and nuclear energy currently provides around 20 per cent of the UK’s electricity needs. Although renewables are likely to provide the majority of the UK's carbon-free power by 2050, reliable low-carbon power sources, such as nuclear, are also needed to achieve a low-cost reliable system for consumers and therefore nuclear will continue to have an important role to play in the UK’s energy future mix and businesses like NE Components, play a key part in this.
On a side note, if you are ever in the Bradwell area, I do encourage you to visit The Bakehouse, very near to NE Components; they do the most outstanding cakes!
Nuclear Week in Parliament began on the 30th January and I was delighted to attend an event in Parliament with a Hognaston resident and nuclear expert, Chris Stait. It was fascinating to learn more about nuclear power and to discuss this with experts, including Chris.’’
