Wednesday the 8th of March is International Women’s Day and all this week, Sarah Dines and other Members of Parliament are doing their bit to celebrate not only women who stand for Parliament, but women in general. Sarah Dines MP celebrated ahead of the day by inviting a group inspirational women from Derbyshire Dales to a roundtable event to discuss their backgrounds and women, supporting women.
Sarah Dines MP said, ‘My dream growing up was to become a barrister and a Member of Parliament. There isn’t a day that goes by that I am not thankful and proud that I have achieved these goals. I was able to do so, because I was supported, encouraged, and was told that with enough hard work I could achieve my dreams. Throughout my career, when I have found myself questioning my ability or lacking confidence, as unfortunately women often do, I have had other women such as teachers, colleagues, friends, and my wonderful mother, who is sadly no longer with us, holding me up and urging me on.
One of the most important things we can all do is work together to inspire young girls and other women so that they too can achieve their dreams and that there should be no such thing as a ‘man’s world’ or subjects at school and university or businesses, that women and girls shouldn’t be part of. That’s why I got together inspirational women from across Derbyshire Dales in celebration of International Women’s Day. We had wonderful attendees such as a young Rolls Royce Apprentice, women in construction, business owners, scientists, women from the care industry, an Army Officer specialising in Mental health services for Forces personnel and women who were told in their past they should be housewives instead of pursuing their dreams, but pursued them anyway. It was a pleasure to be spend a morning with such truly inspiring women and to see some of those barriers that had been in place when our older attendees were young, were no longer in place for the current generation of young women.’
