Secretary of State Oliver Dowden announces that The Northern Light Cinema at Wirksworth will receive a £8,050 grant from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) as part of the Government’s £30,000,000 relief package for independent cinemas.
In the first round of awards, allocated by the British Film Institute (BFI) on behalf of the DCMS 43 independent cinemas will benefit from the Government’s £1.57 billion Culture Recovery Fund.
Sarah Dines MP said: “Many constituents have contacted me in recent months regarding the importance of our arts and culture sectors and I am pleased that today the Government has taken direct steps to aid this recovery here in Derbyshire Dales.
I know that relief such as this award, made possible by The Chancellor’s willingness to support our arts and culture, will have a significant impact in protecting these valuable community spaces. The Northern Light Cinema is a fantastic venue and it is vital that we support our independent businesses to the best of our ability during what has been an unprecedented period of uncertainty.
I visited owners Paul Carr and Esther Patterson to congratulate them on their award and for their contribution to both our arts and culture, and the community of Wirksworth. I know very many constituents are looking forward to their reopening and it was fantastic to learn of their outdoor screening events that they have organised to support their staff through forthcoming months.
This funding is just the first instalment in the Government’s assistance package for independent cinemas with more support to come each week. The Chancellor has also announced that cinemas will be able to apply for Safety Grants, to help independent venues meet the additional costs of creating a safe and COVID-secure environment for staff and audiences. Furthermore, Business Sustainability grants of up to £200,000 will available to help stabilise venues as they reopen.
In the coming weeks, I hope to see more facilities benefit from these measures in the Dales which will come as a welcome relief to many communities, employees and business owners.”
