UK Parliament Week is an annual festival that engages people from across the UK with their UK Parliament, explores what it means to them and empowers them to get involved. This year the 1st Hathersage Scout group reached out to Sarah Dines MP to produce a short video for the Scouts. Sarah took the opportunity and offered a Q&A session, where she answered every question the scouts raised.
Sarah Dines MP said, ‘The Scouts are such a brilliant organisation. I was delighted to be contacted by Joze Taylor, one of the scout leaders for 1st Hathersage scouts to get involved in their discussions for UK Parliament Week. I offered to do a Q&A video for their meeting which was held via zoom and I had a wonderful time answering their questions.
The quality of questions were brilliant and ranged from Free School Meals to visiting Number Ten. I am passionate about demystifying what goes on in Parliament and what it means to be an MP. This is one of the reasons I am so determined to be transparent with my activities and visits on social media. I often hear from younger residents and in fact some older too, that they don’t really know what an MP does and I think that is such a shame. The more we talk to people about our democracy and invite people to get involved in events such as UK Parliament Week, hopefully the more young people become inspired to be part of the democratic process, and perhaps even stand for Parliament themselves one day.
